What is UP for Juniors?

UP for Juniors provides a free service encouraging primary age children to think about their future, through a series of activities and resources. The main aim is to increase children’s confidence and aspirations alongside the curriculum.

Launched in May 2005, we are part of the wider Education Liaison and Outreach Team at the University. We now have over 30 member schools in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire and we see over 3000 primary aged children per year.

Member and non-member schools

UP for Juniors has a bank of target member schools from the local area based on widening participation and feeder schools. These schools are part of our full scheme and take part in a visit from us in school to Year 5 and a visit to us on campus from Year 6.

Non-member schools are able to bring a small group of Year 6 to our Discovery Day.

All local schools are able to request subject specific visits on or off campus which we will endeavour to provide if we are able.

We have sessions for small groups of target schools through our UP for Teeth and UP for Space provision.

We also provide the UP for Juniors interactive website for children, online resources for teaching staff and links for local staff to events, training and support run by the University.

We employ University of Portsmouth students as Student Ambassadors.

They are fully trained and checked to work as Ambassadors.

The students come into schools with UP for Juniors staff to provide a role model for the children. They also work on campus visits enabling the children to ask questions and find out more about university life.
